GOAT 뜻
어떤 분야에서 역사상 최고의 업적을 남긴 사람을 의미합니다. 'Greatest of All Time'의 앞글자만 따온 말입니다. 말 그대로 그 분야 최고의 1인자를 의미하기 때문에 극히 높게 평가하는 내용입니다. 밈에서는 자신이 지지하고 싶은 대상에 대한 찬양으로 쓰입니다. 반어적으로는 오히려 지지하지 않고 비난하고 싶은 대상에게 비꼬듯이 쓰기도 도합니다.
GOAT 유래
1990년대의 전설적인 복싱선수인 무하마드 알리에 대한 수식어로 'Greatest Of All Time'가 사용되었고 그의 아내는 1992년에 해당 수식어에 대한 지적재산 관리는 위해 Greatest of All Time, Inc.(G.O.A.T. Inc.)를 설립했습니다.
이후 래퍼 LL Cool J가 2000년에 알리의 수식어에 영감을 받아 The G.O.A.T.라는 곡을 발표하면서 대중적으로 유행하는 말이 되었습니다.
한국에서는 2010년대부터 농구황제 마이클 조던을 지칭하는 말로 쓰이기 시작했습니다. 미국에서는 전부터 GOAT를 이용한 홍보활동이 활발히 진행되었고 특히 농구 NBA 팬층에서 한국 NBA 팬층으로 전달되었습니다.
GOAT 밈은 2022년 디시인사이드 해외축구 갤러리에서 유래했습니다.
축구를 잘 모르는 사람도 알고 있을 정도로 메시와 호날두의 라이벌 관계는 유명합니다. 일명 메호대전이라고 하여 메시의 팬과 호날두의 팬이 각자의 지지 선수들의 경기력이나 활약상을 가지고 누가 더 위대한 선수인지 논쟁을 벌이는 일이 10년 넘게 이어지고 있습니다.
이런상황에 2021년에 메시가 코파 아메리카에서 활약하며 팀을 우승으로 이끌었고 통산 7번째 발롱도르까지 수상하며 메호대전의은 메시쪽으로 기울게 되었습니다. 이후 2022년 호날두의 심각한 경기 부진이 이어지자 일면 젖닌(젖통닌자)라고 불리는 호날두의 팬들은 일명 구토(메시의 잦은 구토)라고 불리는 메시의 팬들에게 수모를 겪게됩니다.
악재 속에서 호날두 팬들은 호날두를 찬양하기 위해 그의 통상 기록이나 좋은 성적을 가져와 게시판에 '역사상 최고, GOAT'라는 문장을 굵게 강조하여 한 줄만 추가하는 글을 반복적으로 작성합니다. 가장 먼저 호날두 GOAT 찬양글을 시작한 건 'CRISTIANO'라는 유저였고 그를 따라서 사람들이 도배하다 시피 따르기 시작한 겁니다. 마구잡이식의 호날두 찬양글은 추천을 많이 받으면 올라가는 디시인사이드의 인기글인 개념글이 되기도 합니다. 이에 억지스러운 호날두 팬들은 메시 팬들은 물론이고 일반 유저들에게 까지 비난과 조롱을 받게 됩니다.
2021/22 시즌 유럽 챔피언스 리그 16강에서 메시가 소속된 파리 생제르맹 FC이 레알 마드리그에게 역전패를 당했고 그에 앞서 메시가 패널티 킥을 실축한 일이 벌어지면서 다시 메호대전에 불이 붙습니다. 벼루고 있던 호날두 팬들은 메시를 조롱하기 위해 기존의 'GOAT'를 변형하여 '수고하셨습니다, JOAT' 등의 변형된 드립을 치기 시작합니다.
얼마 지나지 않아 호날두 또한 아틀레티코 마드리드에게 무득텀 16강 탈락을 하게 되면서 기세등등하던 호날두 팬들은 사그러들게 됩니다. 여기에서 메시 팬들은 GOAT의 변형 드립으로 조롱받던 것을 호날두 팬들에게 그대로 돌려주게 됩니다.
이렇게 메호대전과 함께 GOAT 드립과 변형인 JOAT 드립을 치면서 엎치락 뒤차락 하는게 축구 관련 커뮤니티로 퍼져나갔고 이어서 일반 커뮤니티에도 퍼지면서 대중적인 밈이 되었습니다.
JOAT 뜻
'GOAT'에서 앞글자 'G'를 'J'로 바꾼 말입니다. 'GOAT'는 역사상 최고의 인물이라는 극찬의 표현이라면 'JOAT'는 발음이 흔히 욕할 때 쓰는 비속어 발음이 되면서 '최악의 인물'이라는 표현이 됩니다. 단일로도 쓰이지만 '역사상 최악, 사상 초유의' 등의 비난 하는 말과 함께 쓰이기도 합니다.
